at Red Eye's Dock Bar
in Grasonville, MD
While there is no charge for this event, we would appreciate donations and hope if you are not a member of BQA, that you would sign up at the event! Look for more details about speakers in the October newsletter!
Our sincerest condolences go out to Congressman Andy Harris and his family for the loss of his wife Sylvia "Cookie" Harris on August 29, 2014. It brings to mind the saying that "behind every great man, is a great woman." She was indeed a great woman and will be missed by many.
At the County Commissioner's meeting on August 26th, Commissioner Dave Olds made a motion to join the Coalition. That motion was amended by Commissioner Jim Moran to include emphasizing the County's support for the state's Water Implementation Program and its intentions to do so would be stated on the coalition's website.
The amended motion passed 3 to 2.
Well done gentlemen! Thank you for showing that Queen Anne's County supports our Bay!

LETTER FROM THE BQA CHAIRMAN!
Dear BQA Members and Area Businesses.
I'm asking for your support of Business Queen Anne's, in the form of membership (business or individual) &/OR sponsorship. We understand and respect the difficulty some may have, teachers, students, public sector workers, entrepreneurs, individuals and small business owners when taking a public, visible stand on some of the issues we support. It's no secret some here have and will continue taking counter "sense of community", regrettable actions, against local people and businesses, simply because they have a differing opinion, idea or vision for growth, jobs and local opportunity? For that reason, BQA will respect any business, individual member or sponsors request for 'anonymity' with their support!
Our mission is to actively advocate sound economic growth; review all proposed state and local legislation and regulations; provide an objective assessment of proposed development in Queen Anne's County and its incorporated towns; endorse and support countywide growth that is well managed and consistent with adopted state and local planning and regulatory guidelines, comprehensive plans, and state and local initiatives; create positive and "business friendly" attitudes on the part of Queen Anne's County elected and appointed officials; and support business activity that promotes and encourages a vibrant economy, development of an adequate labor pool, a fiscally responsible and accountable county government, and a continued unique quality of life in Queen Anne's County!
In Spring 2002 Business Queen Anne's founders saw a need for balance and expanded local opportunity, they stepped up to the plate to lead the charge. The organization was formed as a sorely needed balancing alternative, a pro-active, pro-business coalition for economic development and responsible government. Our objective is to help foster a climate conducive to the continual and orderly growth of both residential and non-residential tax bases in Queen Anne's County. With the proper balance and financial security a solid commercial tax base offers, County residents could enjoy lower more reasonable residential tax rates while enjoying the benefits of business and commercial opportunities, local commerce, local jobs and local tax revenues to pay for services, right here in our County!
86% of Queen Anne's County residents now leave our County daily for work, they take with them opportunity, energy, commerce, business and tax revenues in the form of gas, meals, retail commerce and recreational activities monies that could be spent right here benefiting Queen Anne's County? The extensive and frequently frustrating 'time and toll', beyond just Bay Bridge fee's, of lengthy congested commuting times, leaves most unable, unwilling and frankly drained once they do return to the County. This time they could be spending here, with family, friends, neighbors, community organizations, schools, charities and other local activities, and most importantly, involvement and volunteerism here in our County.
The recent primary election, one historic in terms of candidate spending, will bring a new slate of commissioner's. They may come together, work and succeed at finding consensus to the differing ideas, opinion's and visions for the Counties future, or they may get stuck with the same status quo resisting all growth, jobs and local opportunity. The second option all but assures continued reductions in local services.
With the Fall election comes another opportunity to speak up, promote and endorse what we see as necessary balance in this County. We want and need to be able to counter misinformation and 'campaign promises' that will surely bombard all our mailboxes & inboxes again, we need your help! In the past we've been successful with common sense, targeted ads on the most important and specific issues of concern here, our goal 'then and now' is to counter misinformation, sleight of hand, and convenient omission of facts, providing easily verifiable facts and of course, consequences. It is up to all County residents and businesses to take a stand and be heard, as to what they want, need and desire for Queen Anne's County, and we hope you support us in pursuing that goal.

WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN BUSINESS QUEEN ANNE'S?
BUSINESS Queen Anne's is not like any other business advocacy group in Queen Anne's County. When an issue that affects business arises in Queen Anne's County, we don't have to be neutral or careful to not step on toes! That can make some a little leery, but if your businesses needs someone to stand up and support you, then you'll be glad to have BQA there for you!
BQA has been vocal in the past on issues such as:
Four Seasons on Kent Island
Wye Mills/Chesapeake College Expansion
Minimum Wage Legislature
Sunday Hunting in QAC
Slippery Hill Community
Adequate Public Facility Ordinance
Generally, we support property rights, balanced business growth, an adequate commercial tax base; we support having businesses that allow residents to work and live here in Queen Anne's County!
Also, the board of BQA has interviewed the local candidates and report to the members their positions so members can easily choose a candidate that is aligned with their views on the issues at hand.
If you like what Business Queen Anne's does, but have concern as to customer reaction or backlash, we have a solution... Companies or individuals can become anonymous BQA members or sponsorship supporters!
