STRAW POLL FORUMS
If you have questions or concerns regarding the Straw Poll that will be on the ballot in November regarding whether county commissioners should be elected by district, please mark your calendar for an upcoming forum to be held by the Women's League of Voters!

Business Queen Anne's has previously reported thoughts by BQA board member George O'Donnell who has taken a stance against this change. Back in our March 2016 newsletter we explained that George had seen first hand that Commissioner's vote differently during an election cycle and he has expressed concern over the fact that Commissioners will be able to vote on issues in all districts which makes it unfair to ask residents to not vote on all districts. The issue of continuity has been touted as a reason to have staggered terms, but George points out that if people are concerned with that, they would vote a Commissioner back into office.

BQA recently had Commissioner Jim Moran visit a board meeting to go over why he was for this change. Jim pointed out that 3 out of the 5 sitting commissioners did NOT win their district in the last election. He feels the main benefits to having elections by district are:
  • It will guarantee that each district is represented by the commissioner of their choice, not by commissioners voted in due to voting in other districts.
  • It will eliminate the large price tag of running for commissioner which will allow others to run.
He also encourages people to check out this link, which discussed the straw poll before it was passed. It is important to recognize that this straw poll is to find out how the citizens feel about this issue. Once the results are in, it would still be up to the County Commissioners to act on that information.

There is also a Facebook page set up called "Citizen's for Equal Representation" that you can "like" if you want to know more and discuss your thoughts!

FOUR SEASONS UPDATE
There should be a grading permit issued in the next couple of weeks on this project and tentative plans have been set for a groundbreaking!

Stay tuned for the next step in the process. As we've said before we believe...

IT'S TIME TO PUT A SHOVEL IN THE GROUND!

WHEATLANDS UPDATE
The County pulled out of the lawsuit regarding the appeal of the waiver, but the lawsuit continues with Queen Anne's Conservation and other interested parties and should be heard in November.

Comp Plan amendments have been adopted and Growth Allocation has been reviewed by the town Planning Commission. Hopefully the town's Planning Commission will make a favorable recommendation this month.

This development is strictly commercial with no residential and based on Queenstown's progressive zoning requirements, the new highly efficient sewer plant, and the 60+ acre buffer  and expanded planting area  protecting the Wye River and surrounding the development envelope, Wheatlands should  be the most environmentally friendly development in Queen Anne's County!
WELCOME BARRY WATERMAN TO THE BOARD!
The Chair of Business Queen Anne's is pleased to announce a new addition to the Board of Directors. Barry Waterman with Coldwell Banker Waterman Realty has agreed to serve.

"After the passing of Mareen Waterman in the spring, we knew it would be tough to find someone to join the board that would bring as much knowledge and conviction to this organization," stated BQA Chair Steve Donovan. "We thought it would be a long shot, but it only made sense to ask his son, Barry if he would be willing to step up. We are thrilled that he agreed!"

Barry is owner and agent at Coldwell Banker Waterman Realty. He has served as the Chair of the Queen Anne's County Planning Commission and is presently on the board for the QAC Farm Bureau. He lives in Queenstown with his wife, Diana and likes to hunt in his spare time.

According to Barry, he is "honored to be a part of this organization that meant so much to my father. I'm sure it would have made him happy to know that I will be continuing the good work that he started so many years ago."

Welcome to the board Barry!
