THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT |
Thank you to all the BQA members who are supporting text amendment 12-11 which is sponsored by BQA. The following is a letter submitted by member Gene McGuire to the County Commissioners...
Dear Commissioners,
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the County Commissioners Meeting this evening but I wanted to submit my written testimony before the hearing.
I am in support of text Amendment 12-11 that eliminates the existing gross floor area limitations in the Urban Commercial and the Town Center Zoning Districts in Queen Anne's County.
I believe this is a fair compromise for those who support Big Box and those who are against Big Box in Queen Anne's County. Urban Commercial and Town Center Zoning Districts is more appropriate location for a big box store since these areas already have commercial development in place. Suburban Commercial zoning areas are sensitive areas to those who do not support growth. These areas are more rural and a Big Box Store has the potential to significantly change the landscape in the rural areas that some citizens so adamantly defend.
Please consider responding to the letter from the Talbot County Commissioners who are against commercial development in Queen Anne's County. Please let them know that Queen Anne's is tired of giving all their business commerce revenue to Talbot County. It is about time Queen Anne's County Residents have the opportunity to shop locally instead of driving 30 miles to shop in Annapolis or Easton. If Queen Anne's County residents do not have the ability to shop locally, they will go elsewhere to spend their monies. Queen Anne's County is missing out on a significant source of revenue by not offering their citizens the opportunity to shop within the county.
Plain and simple, if residents cannot find what they need at competitive prices in Queen Anne's County, they will go elsewhere to spend their monies. Queen Anne's County can no longer afford to send residents packing because competition is being blocked.
Regards, Gene McGuire Eugene M. McGuire, Jr., CFP® First Vice President Wealth Management Advisor Portfolio Manager PIA Program
Thank you Gene for getting the big picture about Big Boxes and lending your support!
Gene also wanted to share this story by the Chestertown Spy that shares the fact that both the Big Box Stores and the small businesses in Middletown Delaware are doing well...

HARRIS HOLDS TOWN HALL MEETING |
Several BQA members were on hand at the town hall meeting at Friel Lumber in Queenstown sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors Chesapeake Shores Chapter. According to ABC, "Andy Harris shares our vision that the free enterprise system is one of the things that makes America a great country. He's doing all he can in DC to fend off attacks on our way of life."
"For too long, Washington hasn't listened to what hard-working Americans want to fix this broken economy, and I'm here to listen to what these small business owners have to say," said Rep. Andy Harris. "We can no longer continue down the path of President Obama's failed economic policies that overregulate business owners and hurt the American economy. It is time to work with the business community to create jobs and grow our economy."

Community Invited to Shore Medical Pavilion Dedication
On Thursday, July 19, Shore Health System and the University of Maryland Medical System will dedicate Shore Medical Pavilion, located at 125 Shoreway Drive off of Nesbit Road and US Rt. 50 in Queenstown. The dedication ceremony begins at 5pm and the public is welcome to attend and to stay for refreshments and tours, which will be available until 7pm.
Located next to the Queen Anne's Emergency Center, Shore Medical Pavilion is home to Maryland Primary Care Physicians, which relocated from Stevensville to this more convenient location off of the Nesbit Road exit of US Rt. 50. Other services available in the three-story medical pavilion include diagnostic and laboratory testing, physical and speech therapy, occupational health services, several physician specialty practices including urology, cardiology, neurology and sleep medicine, otolaryngology (ENT) as well as a four-bed sleep lab.
"The Shore Medical Pavilion adds primary and specialty medical services to Shore Health System's Queen Anne's County campus, where the Queen Anne's Emergency Center opened in October of 2010," says Michael Silgen, Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development for Shore Health System. "This medical facility is an opportunity for the University of Maryland Medical System to become the healthcare provider of choice for Queen Anne's County and expands the array of medical services that Shore Health System offers in the Mid-Shore region."
