December 2012

According to their website and ad campaign, the Committee to protect QAC Great Schools (Lynn Caliguri, Treasurer) was successful in convincing 12,797 Queen Anne's County voters, a quarter of the population, to vote against the APFO referendum 'Question A' and tell our commissioners, "Don't overcrowd our schools and overburden our already strained roads & public facilities".

The campaign and website gave the impression they were "approved" by the school system, the parents and the kids, though we didn't see or read of any direct connection. The websites conclusions tab noted "good schools attract businesses and raise property values" which is great to hear in this continuing uncertain and struggling local economy where over 85% of our working residents must leave daily for employment.

Now that Question A has failed, when may we expect the removal of the unsightly portables? When will these new businesses appear so that County children will have the opportunity to work locally, to earn and learn about how our economy functions? When will those higher property values come, of late all we've seen is net higher taxes? Finally, who from this group & its' supporters will now step up and keep Queen Anne's County residents informed about all this coming good news? We look forward to hearing these updates.

U.S. District Court Judge William M. Nickerson ruled today that the Waterkeeper Alliance failed to prove that Alan and Kristin Hudson's chicken houses were polluting a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.
The judge also wrote that the Waterkeeper group had not made its case that Perdue could be held liable for any pollution from the farm. In fact, he said Perdue deserved to be "commended, not condemned" for a program it has suspended since the Waterkeeper lawsuit seeking to train its growers on how to prevent or minimize pollution from their poultry operations.
BQA is thrilled for the Hudson family! After enduring two years of sleepless nights, we hope 2013 is a banner year for them!

Remember, we stress the importance of maintaining proper balance between necessary growth for services, employment opportunities & businesses against those who continue working towards stopping ALL growth. If you are 'FOR' significantly higher taxes along with significant reductions in all County services, then BQA may not be right for you...
