August 2015

On July 22nd Judge Thomas Smith filed a Declaratory Judgement in the Civil Matter involving this project. The complaint challenged the validity of the Resolution 14-33 adopted by the County Commissioners of Queen Anne's County on December 9, 2014. The judge issued an opinion and order holding that resolution to be null, void and of no legal force and effect.

BQA learned that the County Commissioners had a closed session on July 31 to discuss and ultimately decide to file a Motion to Reconsider the Wheatlands case.

Wheatland's is part of BOTH County & Town Comp plans, in growth area's, commercial mixed use, and the town unanimously approved the zoning to allow the project. The town has incurred significant expense on the sewer plant upgrade pretty much requiring this project needed to pay those bills. It is also noteworthy that the buffer exceeds the requirement by one third.

While we understand the work that goes into being a County Commissioner, we want to remind them of the importance of their pro economic development stances made before and after taking office and hope the find a way to regroup and get this project back on track.

This map shows the Wheatlands property located on the south side of Route 50. The buffer along the Wye River is shown in green, the yellow near the top shows a proposed road, and the red shows an area proposed for donation to the State Highway Administration for an overpass and connection to Sportsman's Neck Road. The proposed mixed-use development would take place in the large white area in the center.

BQA Board Member, George O'Donnell, former commissioner and a former waterman recently began working in the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division.

His new position was created to gives those with concerns regarding a particular fishery a customer relations manager. George is the connection between the people and their government which was something Governor Larry Hogan promised when he took office.

According to George, "It's very difficult for citizens to walk the halls of government in Annapolis from the extremities of the state,so we are going to do outreach to make sure everyone's opinions are heard by the policy markers in Annapolis as we work towards the best policies to regulate the fisheries."

With 25 years as a waterman and his background as a public servant, George is tailor made for this position and we know he will do a great job!

Business Queen Anne's sends our thoughts and well wishes to Governor Hogan!
